Band Aided Barbell Lunge

EquipmentBarbell, Squat Rack, Resistance Band
TypeCompound
DifficultyIntermediate
Primary:Quadriceps
Secondary:Hamstrings, Glutes, Hip Muscles
Tertiary:Core
Stabilizer:Upper Back, Calves

📋 How to Perform

  1. Anchor a light long band to the rack at knee height, on the side opposite your working leg.
  2. Set the safety bars just below the bar's lowest point, and load the bar lighter than your usual split squat.
  3. Step your working leg through the band so it sits just above the knee, then unrack the bar onto your upper back.
  4. Take one short step back with your working leg, then set your other foot well behind you in a long, hip-width split stance.
  5. Brace your core and lower your back knee toward the floor, keeping your front knee over your middle toes as the band pulls it inward.
  6. Drive through your whole front foot to stand back up, holding the knee in line all the way.
  7. Finish all reps on this leg, rack the bar, re-anchor the band on the other side, and repeat.

⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Letting the band pull the front knee inward, which defeats the cue and stresses the knee.
  • Shoving the knee out so far that the front foot rolls onto its outer edge, which loses the base.
  • Stepping into a narrow tightrope stance, which makes balance harder and invites the knee to collapse.
